Belgio - Le due campane

Viveva in un grande castello un re con la regina sua moglie e due belle figlie.

Lògan, così si chiamava il re, aveva un vezzo, tutte le volte che faceva una cosa ordinava di suonare la campana che stava in cima alla torre che svettava alta nel centro del castello; e a ogni tipo di suono corrispondeva un’azione. E siccome il re era molto vanitoso e moglie e figlie non erano da meno, era tutto uno scampanare da mattina a sera perché il popolo sapesse quanto i reali lavorassero.

Quindi nessuno si stupì quando dopo tutto quel martellare di campana essa si ruppe del tutto. Dapprima al popolo non parve vero udire quel silenzio e pensarono che il re fosse morto!

Ma il re era ben vivo e stava correndo per tutto il reame a cercare una nuova campana più grande e bella della precedente. Gira di qua, gira di la Lògan arrivò alla fucina di mastro Theo che, dicevano, fosse la più fornita del Paese.

Theo dopo aver salutato il re senza troppi convenevoli gli mostrò le due più grandi e costose campane che aveva: le campane erano identiche ma una era di bronzo e l’altra d’oro! “Quanto costano?” fece il re a Theo – “mille monete d’oro ognuna” rispose l’artigiano.

“ma come? chiese Lògan, uguale costo?” – “Certo, rimandò l’artigiano, quella d’oro costa tanto perché l’ho fabbricata in un giorno ma con l’oro, l’altra perché l’ho fabbricata in un anno, tanto mi è servito perché avesse il più bel suono del mondo”.

Lògan, accecato dal bagliore di un raggio di sole che sfiorando la campana d’oro si spezzò in mille scintillanti luccichii, decise di comprare quella.

“Oltre che suonare- pensò il re- ricorderà alla mia gente che sono ricco più di tutti”.

Mastro Theo avrebbe voluto raccontare al re un’altra caratteristica della campana d’oro ma il sovrano non gliene diede il tempo tanto era eccitato dalla novità.

Per issare la nuova campana ci vollero sette giorni e fu data una grande festa alla quale il popolo dovette partecipare fingendosi allegro ma intristito dal fatto che questa si che avrebbe suonato e chissà quanto, poiché muovendosi mandava talmente tanti bagliori che pareva un piccolo sole e ricordava a tutti, la ricchezza e magnificenza di re Lògan.

Però dopo i primi scampanii, davvero non tanto sonori e armoniosi come quelli di una campana di bronzo, la gente fuori dal castello si accorse che la campana “parlava”! cioè rimandava attraverso il suo stridulo suono, tutte le parole che dall’ultimo scampanio erano state pronunciate al castello!..insomma le parole della famiglia dei reali si andavano tutte a raccogliere come passeri sotto la campana che, appena poi suonava le faceva scappare fuori! Ma da quel giorno scese la sfortuna nella casa del re!…Perché? …Perché le principesse Melissa e Ines tanto eran belle tanto eran scioccherelle e tutte le volte che a corte si presentavano dei pretendenti al matrimonio, mentre i giovani restavano al castello le fanciulle facevano ai principi tanti complimenti ma allorché partivano dal castello speranzosi, la campana, salutandoli per ordine del re, recava subito loro le pettegole parole di Ines e Melissa:

“mamma mia che alito cattivo” – “mamma mia che naso lungo” – “mamma mia quanto è goffo” – in tal modo nessuno dei pretendenti, offesi, faceva più avere notizie e così le due principesse restarono zitelle!

Il “terribile” re Lògan, da parte sua fece sempre meno paura ai popolani, allorché cominciarono a udire tutte le strigliate che si prendeva dalla bisbetica regina Tilde: “ogni volta che senti rumori di guerre che si avvicinano tremi come una foglia!” …. - “stupido re hai speso le ultime ricchezze che avevamo in quella campana”… – “devi inventare delle scuse per fare pagare le tasse al popolo e di nuovo arricchirci!”…..

Sulla regina Tilde infine. La campana d’oro raccontava ciò che le serve dicevano di lei: “non ha rispetto del re, lo riprende sempre, anche di fronte agli invitati”… – “passa le giornate a cambiarsi mille abiti e a guardarsi allo specchio”… – “è lei che ordina a re Lògan cose deve fare e dire, lui non comanda nulla!”….

Oramai i popolani, quando lasciavano il duro lavoro dei campi ed erano chiamati ad ascoltare i discorsi del re dal balcone del castello , cominciavano a ridere ancora prima che Lògan aprisse bocca per fare discorsi seri e più il re parlava loro in modo serio e greve, più essi ridevano!

Belgium - The two bells

Once upon a time in a big castle there lived a king and his wife, the queen, and their two beautiful daughters. The king’s name was Logan and he had a bell on top of the high tower which was placed in the centre of his castle. He very much liked to toll the bell every time he did something and every action had its own chime. Since the king was very vain, and the same were his wife and daughters, the bell was ringing from morning to evening because their majesties wanted the people to know how much they were working.

So nobody was surprised when after so much chiming the bell broke down. At first the people were so happy with the silence and they thought the king was dead!

But the king was well alive and was racing through the whole kingdom to look for a new bell, bigger and more beautiful than the former one. After so much walking about Logan got to Master Theo's forge. He was known as the owner of the best-stocked forge in the Country.

Theo greeted the king informally and showed him the two biggest and most expensive bells he had: the bells were identical but one was of bronze and the other of gold! "How much do they cost?" asked the king. "One thousand golden coins each" answered the craftsman.

"But” asked Logan “do they cost the same?". "Yes, indeed”, said the craftsman “the golden bell costs so much because I have made it in one day, but with gold, the other one because I have made it in one year, I needed so much time in order to give it the most beautiful sound in the world."

Logan, blinded by the shine of a sun ray that touching the golden bell broke into thousands of twinkling glitters, resolved to buy that one.

"This bell will not only toll” thought the king “but will also remind my people I am the richest man of all".

Master Theo would explain another trait of the golden bell to the king, but the king did not give him the the time, so excited he was by the novelty of the thing.

Seven days were needed to raise the new bell onto the tower and then the king gave a big party. At the party the people had to pretend to be happy though they were so sad, because they knew that bell would toll all right and how much, since at the slightest move it sent so many sparkles that it lokked like a small sun and reminded everybody of King Logan's wealth and magnificence.

However, after the first tolling, indeed not so sonorous and harmonious as that of a bronze bell, the people outside the castle realized that the bell "spoke!" Actually, in a shrill voice it spoke back all the words that had been pronounced inside the castle since the last chiming! The words spoken by the royal family gathered up as sparrows under the bell that, as soon as it started tolling, let them all out!

But from that day onwards misfortune entered the king's house! Why? Because the princesses Melissa and Ines were beautiful but silly and every time some pretenders were introduced to them, the young girls complimented the princes so much as long as the youths were in the castle, but when they left the castle full of hope, the bell said goodbye to them as the king had ordered and immediately brought the two sisters' gossipy words to them: "Goodness me, what a bad breath", "Good gracious me, what a long nose", "Good gracious, how awkward he was". So the pretenders, offended, did not send any further news and so the two princesses remained spinster!

The terrible king Logan frightened the people less and less, as they started to hear all the scolding he received from the shrew Queen Tilde: "Every time you hear of wars drawing nearer, you tremble like a leaf!". "Stupid king, you've spent our last wealth on that bell". "You must make up some excuses to impose taxes upon the people so that we'll be rich again".

Finally the golden bell repeated what the maids were saying about Queen Tilde: "She does not respect the king, she's always reproaching him, even in the presence of guests". "She spends the days changing thousands of dresses and looking at herself in the mirror". "It's the queen who orders king Logan what to do and to say, he's no ruler!"

By now the people, when they left the hard work of the fields and were called to listen to the king’s speeches from the balcony of the castle, started to laugh even before Logan opened his mouth to deliver serious speeches, and the more seriously and gravely the king spoke, the more they laughed!
